Who this is for: Managers
๐ผ Why this matters
The most common estimate mistake isn’t a wrong markup or a missed expense โ it’s a wrong quantity. A painter who underestimates paintable area, a landscaper who eyeballs yardage, a roofer who guesses at squares: the math that follows is precise, but the foundation it’s built on isn’t. SmartScope calculators put the measurement step inside the estimate so the quantity that feeds the price is calculated, not estimated.
SmartScope calculators are trade-specific measurement and scoping tools built directly into the estimate builder. They calculate a quantity โ surface area, material volume, shoot day cost, integration hours โ and insert the result as a line item into your estimate automatically. You don’t transfer numbers between apps or re-enter anything. The calculator feeds the estimate.
How they work #
SmartScope calculators are embedded inside each vertical’s estimate view. When you’re building an estimate for your trade, the calculators for that vertical appear as rows or buttons within the estimate screen โ scroll down to find them. Tap one to open it as a panel, enter your measurements or inputs, and tap Apply. The result is added to your estimate as a line item โ material cost, labor phase, or scoped service row โ with no additional step required.
The calculator knows which estimate you’re building. When you apply a result, it goes straight into the right section โ materials into your materials list, labor into your labor phases โ already formatted, already costed, already part of your total.
What’s available by vertical #
Every trade vertical has its own set of calculators matched to the scope questions that come up most often in that trade. A partial overview:
- Pressure Washing โ Surface area with map measurement, chemical dilution, downstream injector flow, equipment cost
- Painting โ Room painter (paintable area with door and window cutouts), paint gallons, LiDAR room scan
- General Contractor โ Area calculator with room list and waste factor, LiDAR scan, pitch and slope, Good / Better / Best tier comparison
- Landscaping โ Mulch and bulk material yardage, hardscape area, irrigation zones, plant material cost, fence and border linear footage
- Video Production โ Pre-production time, shoot day cost, travel and per diem, storage, revision budget, livestream platform costs, VOD turnaround
- Marketing / Agency โ Retainer builder, campaign pricer, social volume, ad spend ROI, media buy allocator
- Freelance / Creative โ Project scope, hourly rate, rush fee, revision budget, usage licensing
- Graphic Design โ Brand identity pricer, batch pricing, print production, licensing, file preparation
- Coaching โ Rate foundation, session package builder, group program, retainer scope, corporate workshop, digital product pricing
- Retail โ Landed cost, platform fee (Etsy / Amazon / Shopify), bundle pricing, volume discount
- Cleaning Service โ Room square footage, time estimator by cleaning type, supply cost per visit, recurring discount
- Web Development โ Project scope, e-commerce complexity, hosting and infrastructure, maintenance retainer, integration pricer, design scope
Two cross-vertical tools are available to any vertical: Satellite Map Measurement for outdoor area scoping with multi-segment mode, and LiDAR Room Scanning for indoor measurement on compatible iPhone models.
Add-On Calculator Packs โ a separate concept #
SmartScope calculators are vertical-specific โ they only appear when you’re in the matching trade’s estimate view. Add-On Calculator Packs are different: they’re specialty trade calculators that work from any job, regardless of vertical. A general contractor who sometimes does roofing, a handyman who does electrical and plumbing โ Add-On Packs give those cross-trade calculators to any estimate without requiring a vertical switch.
To access Add-On Packs from within any estimate, tap the โ action menu icon in the top-right corner of the estimate screen and select Add-On Calculators. Packs must be enabled in Settings before they appear. See Add-On Calculator Packs: What They Are and How to Enable Them โ for setup.
๐ฑ In Your Day: You’re scoping a pressure wash job on a commercial property โ open the surface area calculator inside your estimate, drop pins on the satellite map to trace the lot, tap Apply, and the square footage populates your materials line item before you get back to your truck.
๐ Smart Business Tip
The value of SmartScope isn’t speed โ it’s accuracy. A painter who calculates paintable area instead of estimating it will price a job within a few percent of actual material cost every time. Over a year of jobs, the difference between calculated quantities and guessed quantities is the difference between a healthy margin and a leak you can’t find.
